POLICIES AND INFORMATION

The War Memorial is a 501(c)(3) cultural institution situated on the grounds of the historic Alger Estate and serves an estimated 100,000 individuals with over 3,000 functions annually, including programs to honor veterans, engagement experiences for adults and children, community events and celebrations, and premier hospitality services. Proceeds from the many programs and events that we offer go towards furthering and fulfilling our nonprofit organization mission to be a patriotic, cultural, and community leader. We thank you for your support!

GENERAL RULES:

  • Always treat others with respect and follow any instructions provided by The War Memorial staff.

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult guardian at all times.

  • Shoes and shirts are required at all times while on the premises.

  • Please dispose of waste and recyclables in the appropriate bins.

  • Solicitation of any kind is prohibited.

  • Full payment is required at the time of registration or ticket purchase.

    REFUNDS & EXCHANGES

    Ticketed Events:
    Tickets to events and other purchases are non-refundable, except when The War Memorial is required to cancel or reschedule an event. In the event of a closure or cancellation, guests who have purchased a ticket will be contacted.

    Ticket holders unable to use their tickets are encouraged to call our office at 313.881.7511 to gift their tickets to a friend who may enjoy the experience or donate their ticket(s) back to The War Memorial.

    The following policies apply to all classes, 1-day workshops, and camp experiences. 

    All cancelation/refund requests must be in writing and must be sent via email to ce@warmemorial.org. A confirmation email will be sent with information regarding the outcome of the request. Each request is determined by the Community Engagement department. Refunds are processed by the issuance of a check (if paid by cash/check) or by credit card (if paid by credit card) within 5–10 business days after the review of the request.

    • Refund requests submitted more than two weeks prior to a program start date will receive a 100% refund LESS a $10 an Administrative Fee.  

    • Refund requests submitted less than two weeks before a program start date, but more than 3 business days prior, will be issued a 50% refund LESS a $10 Administrative Fee. 

    • Refund requests submitted less than 3 business days prior to the start of a program will not be granted and no refund will be issued. 

    Day trip refund policy:
    No refunds will be issued for day trips unless cancelled by The War Memorial. Patrons may transfer their day trip reservation to a friend on their own. Please send an email to ce@warmemorial.org with the name of the person attending if you are unable to attend. No refunds for cancellation requests received on the day of the trip, or for no-shows. 

    Transfer policy:
    Transfers are executed solely under the discretion of the Community Engagement staff. After a ticket is transferred, no further transfers or refunds will be accepted.

  • When you attended an event or program at The War Memorial, you enter an area where photography, audio, and video recording may occur.

    By entering the event premises, you consent to interview(s), photography, audio recording, video recording and its/their release, publication, exhibition, or reproduction to be used for news, webcasts, promotional purposes, telecasts, advertising, inclusion on websites, social media, or any other purposes by The War Memorial and its affiliates and representatives. Images, photos and/or videos may be used to promote similar The War Memorial events in the future, highlight the event and exhibit the capabilities of The War Memorial. You release The War Memorial, its officers and employees, and each and all persons involved from any liability connected with the taking, recording, digitizing, or publication and use of interviews, photographs, computer images, video and/or sound recordings.

    By entering the event premises, you waive all rights you may have to any claims for payment or royalties in connection with any use, exhibition, streaming, webcasting, televising, or other publication of these materials, regardless of the purpose or sponsoring of such use, exhibiting, broadcasting, webcasting, or other publication irrespective of whether a fee for admission or sponsorship is charged. You also waive any right to inspect or approve any photo, video, or audio recording taken by The War Memorial or the person or entity designated to do so by The War Memorial.

  • All food and beverages must be purchased through The War Memorial. Per Michigan law, the removal of food or beverages from The War Memorial is prohibited. Additionally, outside alcohol is not allowed on the grounds or in our facilities. Any prohibited alcohol will be confiscated, and violators may be asked to leave the premises.

  • The historic Alger estate, newly renovated Fred M. Alger Center, charming front circle and lush gardens and back lawn, provide a tremendous assortment of unique views that guests can cater to their photography theme and needs. Commercial photography/videography requires special permission, application, and location fees. Please see our Photography page for more information.

    All media professionals must contact the V.P. of Community Engagement and Programming to arrange photo and video shoots.

  • No animals will be permitted into or on War Memorial property. This policy is in effect at all times, including when the facilities are not open to the public.

    1. Exceptions are as follows: 

      • Service animals will be permitted to assist visitors with disabilities. 

      • Police or other certified assistance animals will be permitted when accompanied by a qualified handler on official business.

      • The War Memorial may allow animals on property for the purposes of special programming presentations or for other reasons deemed necessary.

  • Tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and vape devices in any form are prohibited in all War Memorial buildings, at all times

  • The War Memorial is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our guests and staff. To maintain a secure environment, we strictly prohibit certain items from being brought onto our campus.

    Weapons of any kind, including but not limited to firearms, BB-pellet guns, tasers, pocketknives, box cutters, mace, chemical sprays, and brass knuckles, are not allowed on the premises. Exceptions are made only for law enforcement officers, who are permitted to carry their service weapons while on site.

    Please note that this list is not exhaustive. The War Memorial reserves the right to remove any individual or confiscate any item deemed unsafe, inappropriate, or in violation of our policies.   • The War Memorial is committed to maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all. We enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy against any form of intimidation, threats, or behaviors that conflict with our core values. Individuals who engage in such actions will be immediately removed from the premises and may face permanent exclusion from future visits.

    The War Memorial reserves the right to revoke or deny admission, without refund, to anyone who fails to comply with our rules and policies or engages in inappropriate conduct.
